WHAT’S THE SCOOP ON FLAX?

Pick up just about any health or women’s magazines, and you’re likely to find at least one mention of Omega 3, and the health benefits you can realize by making sure your body is getting enough of it.

What is Omega 3, and where do you find it? Omega 3 is one of three important nutrients called "Essential Fatty Acids" (EFA’s). The other two are Omega 6 and Omega 9, both of which are commonly available in vegetable oils like safflower oil and olive oil. Omega 3, however, is only available in specific foods, including fish and flax.

Of the two, flax is much higher in Omega 3. In fact, it has been proposed that you would have to eat fish 6 times a week in order to get enough of this EFA, or you can take a tablespoon or two of flax oil daily to get the same amount. Of course, if you prefer, you can also use raw flax in baking or on salads, ground flax in your cereal, or capsules. Those who recommend ground flax recommend eating 1/4 cup per day; capsule recommendations depend upon capsule size. Remember, however, that the flax oil in capsules has to be "processed" in order to be encapsulated, and won’t contain all the nutrients of the other methods.

What can flax oil do? The list is seemingly endless. Prevention Magazine calls flax a "miracle food" for all the things it can help prevent or alleviate. It is recommended to help aid digestion, improve hair, skin and nails, and to relieve some of the symptoms of post-menopausal syndrome, including hot flashes. In addition, the lignans in flax, which are part of the seed coat, are being promoted as cancer-fighters. Omega 3 can also have beneficial results in the treatment of depression, aggression, ADD and ADHD, and can help lower cholesterol. The Flax Institute of the United States is constantly funding research into this versatile plant, and the benefits seem endless.

At this point, you may be asking how one tiny little seed can do so much. The secret, as mentioned earlier, is in the Omega 3, and most specifically, the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 in the body. You see, 50 years ago, " chicken, cattle, and sheep, were free range animas, and we got the advantages of the diversified diets those animals ate. But, after W.W.II, the trend toward feedlotting began, and the main ingredient in animal feeds was corn, which is very high in Omega 6, but extremely deficient in Omega 3. This has caused the Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio in our blood to become as high as 1:18, and it should be 1:1. Studies have shown that a daily dose of 2 tablespoon of flax oil can eventually help lower that ratio to a healthier 1:4.

Flax Hull Lignans or SDGs are photochemicals that are found in the hulls or seed coat of Flax. The effects of Lignans has been extensively researched and shown to promote health and combating various diseases. These Lignans have such extraordinary potential that they have been studied for cancer preventive properties. Lignans also help balance hormone related problems.

You can take any of these products in juice, on your salad, in cottage cheese or in hot cereals etc. Flax is truly a wonderful little seed! Please share it with those you love.

(Flax Oil should not be heated, however, because high temperatures will destroy some of its valuable properties.)
